General Voting Information (Expand All)
In even-numbered years, the primary election is held on the first Tuesday after the third Monday in August. The general election is held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or until the last person in line at 7 p.m. has voted.

Wyoming requires a person to show an acceptable form of ID when voting in person. You may use any one of the following forms of identification:

● WY Driver's License or ID Card

● Tribal ID Card

● US Passport

● US Military Card

● DL or ID Card from Another State

● University of Wyoming Student ID

● Wyoming Community College Student ID

● Wyoming Public School Student ID

● Valid Medicare Insurance Card*

● Valid Medicaid Insurance Card*

*Medicare and Medicaid insurance cards will no longer be an acceptable form of identification for voting purposes after December 31st, 2029.
Wyoming law entitles voters to one hour, other than the meal hour, to vote. However, the law does not apply to certain categories of employees, such as some federal workers or those who have three or more consecutive nonworking hours during the time polls are open. (W.S. 22-2-111)
You may vote a provisional ballot. In order for your vote to be counted, you must provide proof of your eligibility to vote to the county clerk no later than close of business the day following the election.
First Time Voter Information (Expand All)
An individual must first qualify to register to vote. Qualifications for a Wyoming voter include:

● 18 years of age or older on Election Day

● United States Citizen

● Resident of Wyoming and the precinct in which you register

● Withdrawn voter registration from other jurisdiction, if applicable

● Present a valid Wyoming Driver License if you have one and if not, provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number. If you have neither, please indicate this on the Voter Registration Application form.

● Not declared to be mentally incompetent by a court

● Not convicted of a felony (unless you were pardoned or have had your rights restored)
A seventeen year old may register to vote if they will be eighteen (18) years old by the next general election.
If you are a resident of Wyoming, you will not be automatically registered to vote. You may register by submitting the Wyoming Voter Registration Form to your County Clerk in the following ways:

1. Register in person;

2. Register by mail; or

3. Register at the polls on Election Day.
One of the following:

● United States Passport;

● Valid driver’s license or ID card issues by any state;

● ID issued by a federal, state or local government/agency;

● Photo ID card issued by the University of Wyoming, a Wyoming community college, or a Wyoming public school;

● United States Military ID; or

● ID card issued to a Dependent of a member of the United States Armed Forces.

OR

Any two or more of the following:

● Certification of United States Citizenship;

● Certificate of Naturalization;

● United States Military Draft Record;

● Voter’s Registration Card from another State or County;

● United States Social Security Card;

● Certification of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State;

● Original or certified copy of a birth certificate bearing an official seal; and

● Any other form of identification issued by an official agency of the United States or a State.

In the event of a challenge, if the residence address is not included in the document or if it is not current, then you may be required to produce other documentation of your residence address in accordance with W.S. 22-3-118 or 22-15-101 through 109. In the event of a challenge, the following documents, showing your name and address, are acceptable proof of identity and residency:

● Current utility bill;

● Current bank statement;

● Current government check;

● Current paycheck; or

● Any other current government document showing your name and address.

*Some counties offer vote centers. Vote centers allow for residents in a county to vote at ANY polling place location in that county. Please contact your County Clerk to see if your county offers vote centers.
Yes. Wyoming requires someone voting in pereson to provide an acceptable form of identification. Any of the following forms of identification will be accepted:

No, you are not required to vote for all the races that are shown on the ballot.
No, you may still vote absentee. An absentee ballot may be requested at any time during a calendar year in which the election is held, except for the day of the election. The request must be made through your local County Clerk’s office.

The ballot may be voted in person at the clerk's office or by mail 28 days before an election (45 days for military or overseas voters).
Your registration is good as long as you continue to vote. However, if you miss voting in a General Election, you may be purged from the voter roll and need to re-register.

If you move to a different county in the state or change your name/address, you will need to notify the county clerk.

Register to Vote (Expand All)
You may register to vote if you meet all of the following qualifications:

● A United States citizen

● A resident of Wyoming

● 18 years of age or older on election day

● Not declared to be mentally incompetent by a court

● Not convicted of a felony (unless you were pardoned or have had your rights restored)
● You may register in person at the county clerk or town clerk’s office.

● You may register by mail. Send your completed and notarized voter registration application to your county clerk. When mailing your form, be sure to attach photocopies of your identification document(s). Click here to obtain the registration form.

● You may register at your polling place on Election Day. Please bring documents that prove your eligibility to register and vote. ● The deadline for voter registration is 14 days before an election. However, you may register and vote at the same time -- during the absentee voting period or on Election Day.
Wyoming law does not define the period of residency for voter registration. Applicants are asked on the voter registration application to provide their residence address in Wyoming, sign an oath affirming that they meet the legal qualifications to register and vote, and to provide a document that bears their name and residence address (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, pay stub, etc). Your Wyoming driver’s license is the preferred document.
There are 23 county clerks who are the chief election officers for their counties. Feel free to contact your county clerk if you have specific questions about your voter registration, polling place, or voting. Click here to obtain the roster of county clerks.
No, you cannot register to vote at the same time as you get your driver’s license. The town or county clerk’s office and your polling place are the only places where you can register to vote. Wyoming is exempt from the National Voter Registration Act, also known as the Motor Voter Act, which permits voter registration at the department of motor vehicles.
If you voted in the most recent general election, you remain on the voters’ list. If you did not vote in the last general election, if you have moved to another county or changed your name, you will need to register with the county clerk.
  • To change or declare a new party affiliation for the primary election, voters must complete the Wyoming Voter Registration Application & Change Form and submit it to their county clerk's office no later than the day before the candidate filing period begins. The candidate filing period begins ninety-six (96) days preceding the primary election.

  • To change your party affiliation or to declare a new affiliation for the general election, complete the Wyoming Voter Registration Application & Change Form and submit it to your county clerk’s office any time after the primary election but no later than 14 days before the general election. Voters have the option to change their party affiliation at their polling place on the day of the general election or when requesting an absentee ballot.
● To register and vote in Wyoming, a convicted felon—regardless of where they were convicted—must have their right to vote restored in Wyoming. Contact the Department of Corrections at (307) 777-6341 for information on restoration of voting rights.

● Felons who register and vote illegally are subject to prosecution. Persons convicted of false swearing or false voting may be sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the state penitentiary or a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
Voting - Absentee (Expand All)
● Registered voters may request an absentee ballot from your county clerk at any time during an election year, but not on the day of the election. To request an absentee ballot, call or write your county clerk. You do not have to give a reason for requesting an absentee ballot.

● Absentee voting begins 28 days prior to the election (45 days for military or overseas voters) and ends the day before the election.

● If you registered to vote by mail and are voting by absentee ballot in your first federal election, you must enclose a copy of your photo ID or document bearing your name and residence address in the envelope with your voted ballot.

● Voted absentee ballots must be received in the county clerk’s office by 7 p.m. on election night in order to be counted. Ballots received after this deadline will not be counted.
No, once a ballot has been received by your Local County Clerk's office, the ballot is considered voted.

Note: If you have marked your ballot and have not yet sent it in, but wish to change who you voted for, you may destroy that ballot and call your Local County Clerk's office for a replacement ballot or vote in person.
No. Voters who mail in their absentee ballot are not required to provide any additional form of identification.
Voting - Military & Overseas Citizens (Expand All)
● U.S. Citizens, 18 years of age or older who are active duty members of the Armed Forces, Merchant Marine, Public Health Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Commissioned Corps;

● Eligible family members (U.S. citizens, 18 years or older) of military personnel; and

● U.S. Citizens residing outside the United States.
In Wyoming, any qualified elector may apply for an absentee ballot at any time during a calendar year in which the election is held, except for on Election Day. When requesting your ballot, please allow for enough processing and mail delivery time. Wyoming statutes state that absentee ballots received after the day of the election will not be counted.
No formal absentee ballot request form is required by the State of Wyoming for citizens who are registered voters in Wyoming.

A voter may request an absentee ballot by contacting the County Clerk by phone, email, fax or mail. However, if you choose to use a form, this Absentee Ballot Request Form may be completed and emailed to the county clerk of the appropriate county.

When requesting a ballot, please include the following information:

● Your full legal name;

● Your date of birth or social security number;

● Your Wyoming residential address; and

● Your mailing or email address.

The quickest way to both register and request an absentee ballot is by using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). This form acts as both a registration and absentee ballot request form. Please note that this form only serves as a temporary registration. Once completed, this form must be mailed to your local County Clerk’s Office.

If you want to be a permanent registered voter in Wyoming, please fill out and submit the Wyoming Voter Registration Form.

A registered voter may request an absentee ballot by contacting the County Clerk by phone, email, fax or mail. However, if you choose to use a form, this Absentee Ballot Request Form may be completed and emailed to the county clerk of the appropriate county.

When requesting a ballot, please include the following information:

● Your date of birth or social security number;

● Your Wyoming residential address; and

Election officials are required to send your ballot 45 days before an election for those who are registered and have requested a ballot. If you have submitted your Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) within 45 days of the election, they will send it as soon as possible. You may also determine the status of your absentee ballot by tracking your ballot here.
If you do not receive your ballot within 3 weeks of the election, we recommend you use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). This form can be found online at https://www.fvap.gov/wyoming.

If you receive your Wyoming absentee ballot after mailing in your FWAB, you may still complete and mail-in your Wyoming ballot. If your Wyoming ballot is received on or before the election, the county clerk will accept your Wyoming ballot in place of your FWAB.
For voting purposes, "voting residence" can be the State or territory where the voter last resided prior to entering military service OR the State or territory that the voter has since registered to vote in. Even though the voter may no longer maintain formal ties to that residence, the address determines the voter's proper voting jurisdiction. Military personnel and their eligible family members may change their voting residence when they change their permanent duty stations, or they may retain their voting residence without change. This may mean that the family's Uniformed Service member has a different voting residence than his/her family members.
Your legal State of residence is your address in the State in which you were last domiciled, immediately prior to leaving the United States.

This residence may remain valid even if:

● You no longer own property or have other ties to that State;

● Your intent to return to that State is uncertain; or

● Your previous address is no longer a recognized residential address.

Election & Ballot Information (Expand All)
Your county clerk will publish sample ballots in the newspaper and post them in the office prior to the election. The secretary of state’s office publishes proposed constitutional amendments and statewide ballot propositions on this website and in newspapers.
In order to pass, a constitutional amendment and statewide ballot issue must receive a majority of the total ballots cast in the election. The same provision applies to statewide initiatives and referendums. As an example, if the total number of ballots cast in the general election was 250,701, the majority needed to approve a constitutional amendment would be 125,351.
● If you want to vote for Republican or Democratic candidates in the primary, you must be a registered voter of that party. Under Wyoming law, primary elections are mainly held to nominate candidates for partisan offices to be filled at the general election.

● If you are unaffiliated or are a member of a minor or provisional political party, you will receive a primary ballot containing only non-partisan candidates, i.e., municipal candidates.

● If you are seeking a state office, including state legislature, contact the Secretary of State’s office at (307) 777-5860. Candidates for state office may file online or complete the application for nomination form.

● Filing deadlines are posted on the Election Calendar on our website or contact your county clerk.
Yes, you may form a committee in advance. A committee needs to have two different people serving as chairman and treasurer. Candidate campaign committees at the local level file their formation forms with the county clerk. Candidate committees for statewide candidates, including legislative, must file online using the Wyoming Campaign Finance Information System (WYCFIS) website. Independent candidates must petition for ballot access. Petitions containing the required number of signatures of registered voters must be submitted to the appropriate filing office no later than the day before the primary election. Independent candidates for state or national offices submit their petitions to the Secretary of State and local candidates to the county clerk. Read the Wyoming Campaign Practices Act (W.S. 22-25-101 through 22-25-115) and the Campaign Guide posted on our website. In addition, check city or county ordinances for any restrictions they may have on the placement of campaign signs and advertisements.
Voter registration lists are available from the county clerk (for local candidates and ballot issues) or from the Secretary of State (for state candidates and ballot issues). If you need a voter registration list for a local ballot issue or candidate, contact your county clerk. If you need a list on behalf of a state candidate or related to a statewide ballot proposition, send a completed request form to the Secretary of State’s office.

Your date of birth, drivers’ license and social security numbers, telephone number, and e-mail address are confidential. Your name, address and party affiliation are public information. Voter registration data is provided to persons who sign an oath affirming that they will not use the data for commercial purposes.
Information on local candidates may be obtained from your county clerk. Information on state candidates, candidate committees, political action committees, and parties is posted online on Wyoming’s Campaign Information System website.
There is no recall provision for state elected officials or legislators. W.S. 15-4-110 provides for the recall of municipal officials who serve under the commission form of government. However, no municipality in the Wyoming currently has a commission form of government.
Automated telephone calls (robocalls) for political purposes are illegal in Wyoming. Violation of WS 6-6-104 is a misdemeanor punishable by six months imprisonment, a fine of up to $750, or both. Refer your complaint to your district or county attorney.
County clerks are not permitted to accept batches of voter registration forms. Organizations may direct people to the registration application form on our website or provide blank copies which applicants may fill out and submit individually to the county or town clerk. Contact your county clerk if you have questions regarding organized efforts to register voters.

About Our Office

We have a long history of serving the public. Beginning in April 1869 with the appointment of the first Secretary of the Territory of Wyoming, Edward M. Lee, by United States President Ulysses S. Grant, this office has always served the public from the State Capitol Building. However, following the completion of the Capitol Renovation Project in 2019, the Office is now located at Herschler Building East, Suites 100 and 101.
